Everyone Likes 3D - No One Likes 3D Glasses

COMPELLING CONTENT, CONSUMER EDUCATION, WILL DRIVE HOME 3D SAY SPEAKERS AT THIRD ANNUAL 3D ENTERTAINMENT SUMMITTM

Featured Keynote M. Night Shyamalan Warns 3D Could Create Audience Expectations Which Compromise Directors' Story-Telling

3D Glasses Confusing, Too Expensive ... And, Says ESPN's Bryan Burns, Nothing To Worry About

Compelling content is the key driver for home 3D adoption, consumers are confused, no one likes 3D glasses. And all these challenges will be met. That was the collective optimistic message from session moderators, featured speakers and panelists on the final day two of the third annual 3D Entertainment Summit™ presented by Unicomm, LLC and The Bob Dowling Group in association with Variety.

But there were also words of caution, eloquently expressed by writer/director M. Night Shyamalan in a special keynote interview with conference chairman Bob Dowling.

Shyamalan, a self-described non-techie, said he was wary that audiences' expectations of 3D films will force filmmakers to compromise "story-telling integrity" for eye-catching special effects.

"3D is like candy," said Shyamalan, "and I'm afraid if we don't give the audience lots of 3D candy they'll be disappointed."

"M. Night said some things today most people didn't want to hear," commented Dowling, "which is precisely what the 3D Entertainment Summit is all about: hearing different points of view - in an intimate setting - and then talking about them."
ESPN's Bryan Burns called 3D a "team race, we're all in this together." Burns said ESPN's knock-your-socks-off moment came when "we tested 3D with a USC/Ohio State football game and saw viewers in the first five rows diving for cover." Burns spoke for many when he suggested everybody "get over" the issue of 3D glasses to which audiences are already quickly adapting.

Thursday morning's session, "Home 3D – Solutions & Strategies," presented by DEG: the Digital Entertainment Group, included an overview by David Bishop, President of Sony Pictures Entertainment (and a DEG VP) after opening remarks by Variety's President, Neil Stiles and Unicomm CEO John Golicz.
